Write a compelling essay introduction

The introduction is considered by many to be the most important part of an essay. This is important for several reasons. This is the reader's first impression of your essay. This is where you first approach the question and express your opinion. It is also where you set or "point out" the direction your essay will take. Strive for a clear, confident, and convincing presentation. Get straight to the point - don't waste time with a rambling or narrative introduction.

Start with a little context, then answer the question, formulate your arguments, and point out which direction your essay will take.

Write fully formed paragraphs
Many history students fall into the trap of writing short paragraphs, sometimes containing just one or two sentences. A good history essay contains paragraphs that are themselves "mini-essays," usually 100 to 200 words each.

A paragraph should be about one topic or issue, but it should contain a detailed study of that topic or issue.

A good paragraph begins with an effective introductory sentence, sometimes referred to as a topical or signaling sentence. This sentence introduces the topic of the paragraph and briefly explains its meaning to the question and its arguments. Good paragraphs also contain full explanations, analysis and evidence, and possibly a couple of quotes.

End with an effective conclusion
The conclusion is the last paragraph of your essay. A good conclusion should do two things. First, you must repeat or confirm the argument in your essay. Second, you should end your essay with an ideally polished ending that won't be harsh or awkward.

An effective way to do this is with a summary of "what happened next." For example, an essay on Hitler's rise to power in 1933 may end with a couple of sentences about how he consolidated and consolidated his power in 1934-35.

Your output doesn't have to be as long or complex as your main paragraphs. You should avoid adding new information or evidence to the conclusion.

Link and cite your sources
A history essay is likely to be successful if referenced correctly. Your essay should support your information, ideas and arguments with quotes or links to reliable sources.

The link not only acknowledges the work of others, it also lends credibility to your writing and gives a teacher or consultant insight into your research. More information on Story Writing Links can be found here.

Viewing, editing and searching comments
Each essay must be reviewed, revised and, if necessary, rewritten before being sent for evaluation. Ideally, trials should be completed a few days before the due date and then deferred for a day or two until review.

Look for spelling and grammatical errors, typos, incorrect dates, or other factual errors first.

Then consider how you can improve the clarity, tone, and structure of your essay. Does your essay follow a logical structure or sequence? How clear and effective are your rehearsal signs? Are some sentences too long or "incoherent"? You're repeating yourself? Need to expand, clarify, or strengthen paragraphs with additional evidence?
